Have you ever had anyone ask you why your clients work with you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a coach, I ask people this all the time. And a lot of time, I get the answer, ‘I don’t know.’<\/p>\n

It’s okay to answer the question that way, but then we have to get into what the answer\u00a0should\u00a0<\/em>be.<\/p>\n

Let’s take it from you being the consumer.<\/p>\n

\"\"It’s like anything you buy – what helps you to make the decision to pick one brand over another?<\/p>\n

I’ll use my toothpaste example! (I use this in my Getting Started program!)<\/p>\n

One toothpaste is family size. Another is travel size.<\/p>\n

One toothpaste is white paste. Another is gel.<\/p>\n

One toothpaste has whitening properties. Another does not.<\/p>\n

One is on sale. The other is not.<\/p>\n

One is Crest brand. One is Colgate brand.<\/p>\n

These are the\u00a0features<\/strong>\u00a0of the toothpaste that help you to make your decision about which one to buy. So how do you decide?<\/p>\n

Some people buy based on loyalty.<\/strong>\u00a0Or sale prices.<\/strong>\u00a0Or for some of the features I’ve mentioned above.<\/p>\n

In our house we buy Colgate Total white paste family size, mostly when it’s on sale. But I’ll buy it even if it’s not on sale, because it’s our favourite brand.<\/p>\n

My husband doesn’t like gel toothpaste. I like the cleaner feeling of Colgate. It’s a compromise!<\/p>\n

But you get the picture.\u00a0There are things here that help us to make the decision of what we want to buy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The same thing happens with your potential clients.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They will decide whether to work with you based on what you can offer them. And it isn’t always based on price.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So you have to\u00a0figure out what it is that makes you different,\u00a0<\/strong>and make sure that message gets through to your clients.<\/p>\n

\"\"Do you have\u00a0special experience or training<\/strong>?
\nDo you have a\u00a0technical (or creative?) mind<\/strong>?
\nDo you have a system you use to\u00a0make their work more efficient?<\/strong>
\nDo you offer\u00a0regular phone calls<\/strong>\u00a0to keep their project management ticking?
\nDo you have a\u00a0developer’s license<\/strong>\u00a0for some kind of software that you can use for them?
\nDo you have a\u00a0team of people who help you\u00a0<\/strong>get your client work done?
\nDo you\u00a0work full time as a VA\u00a0<\/strong>(as opposed to part time)?
\nAre you\u00a0Canadian (or US, or Australian, or from the UK)<\/strong>\u00a0– ie in the same country as them?
\nDo you practice the\u00a0same hobbies\u00a0<\/strong>as they do?
\nDo you have the\u00a0same core values\u00a0<\/strong>as them?<\/p>\n

All of these questions and more are things that you can ask yourself to figure out\u00a0what it is that sets you apart from the others\u00a0<\/strong>who can also ‘do their work’.<\/p>\n

It’s important to do this exercise so that you can\u00a0incorporate this information into your marketing and networking.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Try it – I bet you’ll learn something about yourself.<\/p>\n

And this exercise also\u00a0helps us to value ourselves<\/strong>\u00a0as well (something that’s good for us to remember every day of the week!)<\/p>\n
