{"id":1868,"date":"2017-07-26T16:30:59","date_gmt":"2017-07-26T20:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yourvamentor.com\/blog\/?p=1868"},"modified":"2023-03-07T13:37:22","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T18:37:22","slug":"how-do-you-find-your-core-message","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yourvamentor.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/how-do-you-find-your-core-message\/","title":{"rendered":"How Do You Find Your Core Message for Your VA Business?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Marketing and networking can be challenging when you are a VA.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">If it&#8217;s not something you specialize in providing as a service to your clients, there can be a steep learning curve.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">But how do you get clients if you don&#8217;t learn a little bit about marketing, right?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">One of the pieces of advice I like to share is about\u00a0<strong>developing a core message<\/strong>\u00a0that you can talk with people about.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">When you go to a networking event, and someone asks you what you do, how do you reply?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Usually this goes one of two ways: either you recite your 30 second elevator pitch, or you just tell them you are a VA.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Neither of these is the right answer to that question, in my opinion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A\u00a0<strong>30 second elevator pitch<\/strong>\u00a0should be reserved for a formal introduction at, say, a round table networking event. It&#8217;s not usually conversational enough because you have to hit on a whole bunch of points to cover it all.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">And telling people,\u00a0<strong>&#8216;I am a VA.&#8217;<\/strong>\u00a0and nothing more doesn&#8217;t give enough information, and might even confuse people if they haven&#8217;t heard of it before. It also forces them to ask a bunch of questions about you, but that&#8217;s not what you should be focusing on!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">When you are networking with potential clients, it&#8217;s not important for people to learn about you (because you are the service provider and they are the buyer!).\u00a0<strong>It&#8217;s important for YOU to learn about them.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">So it&#8217;s far more important to ask questions about their business than it is to answer questions about yours.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Your core message comes into this by being the\u00a0<strong>thread through the conversation<\/strong>, if you will.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">So what is your core message?<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">It is the key things that you want to convey to any potential client &#8211; but not in the form of an elevator pitch.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">You want them to know:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">&#8211; what you can help them with<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">&#8211; how specifically it will make their business (and life) better<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">&#8211; why they need YOU to help them with it<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">It&#8217;s a very simple concept. Don&#8217;t overthink it. It&#8217;s a high level overview, and it can help you really nail a networking conversation or some marketing initiatives when you keep it as simple as possible.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">So when you are having conversations with people, think about those three things and keep them at the forefront of your conversation.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">When you talk about their actual issues, and how you can solve them, and why they will be so much happier when they work with you, the conversation flows very easily, and it makes it all easier for everyone.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">And when a client feels that a conversation is easy, they know you understand them and their business, and they will be more inclined to work with you.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Your core message is something that carries through all of your marketing initiatives too. So the more you simplify it now, the more confident you will be talking about it in conversations too.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">What is yours?
