If you are\nspinning your wheels in your VA business, it might be time to start working\nwith a coach.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Now I know I\u2019m a Virtual Assistant coach, but this is not an article\ntrying to convince you to hire me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I want to talk to you about today is how to figure out when it might be time for you to hire someone to coach you (me, or someone else!). Because the time is not always right. But sometimes it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people I talk to about coaching are happy when they\nrealize I am not a high pressure kind of coach, who tells you that you need\ncoaching for every little thing in your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I will always tell you when I think you need help with\nsomething, and I will always say that you need to get someone to help you with\nit (whether that\u2019s me or not.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So let\u2019s first talk about what a business coach does:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Not unlike a hockey coach, a business coach can teach you strategies that you have not used before, to help you achieve better results in various areas of your business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A coach can help with business planning and strategy, messaging, marketing, mindset, and more. Some specialize in one or more of those things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coaches generally do not teach skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are hired to provide strategy and accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are three times when a Virtual Assistant might consider working with a coach:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Research and Setup Phase<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When you are just starting out in your business, you are in\nwhat I call the research and setup phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a lot to learn, information to gather, and things\nto set up before you start working with clients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will decide your services, set your rates, create your\nmarketing message, and get your onboarding pieces set up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it necessary at\nthis stage to have a coach?<\/em> No, it\u2019s not. You can do all of this stuff\nyourself \u2013 or with the help of advice from colleagues or trusted advisors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it\u2019s right:<\/em>\nWorking with a coach in this phase could be the fastest way to get started\nproperly. You will follow a proven guideline or checklist, with minimal room\nfor error \u2013 when you work with someone privately to get started. When time is\nof the essence, it\u2019s probably a good option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Launch Phase <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Once you are already ready to work with clients (or working\nwith at least one), you are in what I call the launch phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a launch phase because you are usually bringing in your\nfirst several clients, feeling the waters out, and still getting used to\nworking virtually. You are launching your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it necessary at\nthis stage to have a coach?<\/em> Of course not. Once you are off and running you\ncan meet people and sign clients on your own. Many VAs do this easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it\u2019s right:<\/em> Working\nwith a coach in this phase can help you reach the right people quickly \u2013\nmaximizing your networking and marketing efforts. It can also ensure you are\ncharging the right rates. If you are not seeing the results you want to see in\nyour business, consider a consultation with a coach to see if they can help you\nwith your biggest struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growth Phase<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Once you have established your business, you might want to grow\nit substantially, either by bringing on subcontractors, specializing your\nservices, or upleveling your client list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it necessary to\nhave a coach at this phase<\/em>? No, again, it\u2019s not necessary, but this is one\nof the best times to work with someone because you are travelling roads you\nhave never been on before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you are in this phase, you are often busy with client\nwork and your billable hours are high. Sometimes you are growing so that you\ncan change the way you charge your clients \u2013 work less and charge more. Going\nback to the research phase at this point often means that you risk making\nerrors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it\u2019s right:<\/em>  To grow your business properly, you should seek\nthe proven advice of a coach \u2013 someone who can look over your plans and ensure\nthat you are taking the right steps in the right order. This is the stage when I\nsee VAs waste time and money because they try to grow on their own without\nadvice. If you are feeling overwhelmed because you are working too much and not\nmaking enough money, find a coach that can help you strategize a better\nbusiness model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learn what you don\u2019t know.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When you are struggling, it\u2019s the most important time to\nlearn stuff, and when it comes to business or marketing training, most of it\nyou can learn just once and apply over and over again in your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, working with a coach is a big decision. It\u2019s a\nmonetary investment, so you have to weigh the investment and the timing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when is it not right? <\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At any stage, working with a coach is not a good idea if you are not coachable. If you are not ready and willing to do the work the coach advises you to do, then don\u2019t work with a coach. In order to see results, trust the person whose expertise you are asking for. And follow the plan!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
