Last week we talked about 4 big mistakes that VAs make<\/a> when they are getting started or trying to get clients.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This week I have 4 more for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I started the list last week, I realized that there\nwas too much for just one sitting, so I broke it up to make it more manageable\nfor you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And honestly, there are probably even more mistakes I\ncould list but as much as I want to help you correct these mistakes, I prefer\nto balance the negative slant that a lot of people take when teaching or\ncoaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hope you find the next four mistakes (and their fixes)\nhelpful:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding a client, then setting up their VA business<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is super common and\nit\u2019s a big mistake. We want to make a good impression on our clients from the\nstart \u2013 so it\u2019s really smart to have everything you need ready to go before you\nagree to work with anyone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But yet I see lots of\nposts in the VA groups \u2018I got my first client! Who\u2019s got a contract I can use?\u2019\nor \u2018A client wants me to do their social media. How do I charge properly for\nthat?\u2019. You aren\u2019t ready to work with clients if you don\u2019t have these things in\nplace already. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to do:<\/em> Preparing your paperwork, your\nrates, your service offerings and your work flows is the best way to get your\nbusiness off to the right start. Yes, there may be a client come along faster\nthan you think, but that\u2019s precisely why you have to focus on the setup part\nbefore you even start having conversations with clients (especially your\nrates!!!). The good news is you can do this part very quickly, and come off as\nmuch more professional than a VA who doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning on the client’s dime<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Most VAs I know are\nvoracious learners, myself included! Many of us thrive when we are learning,\nand it can be hard to pass up a training. We also don\u2019t very often want to say\nno to a client when they ask us to do something, even if we don\u2019t know how to\ndo it \u2013 I can learn that!<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this can land you in\na tough spot when you spend a lot of time learning something \u2013 or\ntroubleshooting it when things don\u2019t go easily. And then the inevitable\nquestion arises \u2013 should I charge the client to learn this? The short answer is\nyes, if your client needs you to learn it, it is billable to them. But the\nlonger conversation is, you don\u2019t need to do whatever the client asks you to do\n\u2013 and yet so many VAs do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to do<\/em>: It\u2019s your VA business. You need\nto focus on what you know how to do best. If you don\u2019t offer a service the\nclient needs,you don\u2019t need to do it. Especially if it\u2019s something that you\nhave to spend time learning. This is even more important if you are just\ngetting started as a VA. Offering services that you are an expert in is the\nbest way to build a VA business where you are in demand for what you love to\ndo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subbing out to other VAs too soon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another topic I hear come\nup often is subcontracting. When a client or a prospect needs tasks done that\nyou don\u2019t do, some VAs move right into finding a \u2018sub\u2019 to do them. This is all\nkinds of wrong, especially when you are just getting started with your VA\nbusiness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s perfectly okay to\ntell a client that you don\u2019t offer the services they need. You should be\nconnecting with clients who need YOU \u2013 you don\u2019t need to be helping clients who\ndon\u2019t need your services by finding others to do them. Listen, subcontractors\nare great \u2013 but there is a right way (and a right time) to do this – if you\nwant lots more information about subcontracting, be sure to check out my\npodcast episode. www.YourVAMentor.com\/podcast <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to do<\/em>: Plan to bring in subs when your\nbusiness is booked out, and not a minute before. Bringing team members into\nyour business needs to be well thought out and planned. You need to have enough\nrevenue to support others in your VA business. Your clients need to be\ninformed. Your rates have to be set properly. You should have processes in\nplace for work to be done. And more. Subcontracting can be great when you are\nprepared, but it\u2019s never great on the fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thinking they are a VA, but they are not (yet)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This probably sounds\nharsh, but I have so many conversations with VAs who tell me they are a VA but\nthey have been looking for clients for (insert length of time here). Often it\nis months, or even a year, that they have been trying to get clients, but still\nhaven\u2019t got one. Unfortunately I hate to say it, but until you actually get a\nclient, you aren\u2019t a VA. You are only \u2018in\u2019 business when you have revenue. But\nthe great news is that you can get a client soooo easily! If you haven\u2019t yet,\nyou just need to change where you are looking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to do:<\/em> Sit down and really come up with\na strategy to find clients. If you don\u2019t have any clients yet, I\u2019m guessing you\ndon\u2019t have a strategy \u2013 or at least not one that works for you. Figure out what\nyou are doing wrong. Get support and advice if you don\u2019t know what that is – then\nquickly implement the strategy. I can guarantee you that you can get a client this\nmonth<\/em> if you just change your tactics!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okay that\u2019s enough about\nmistakes, right? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like I said, I hate to\never be negative, because I don\u2019t think it\u2019s always helpful \u2013 but it is really\nimportant to highlight some of the things we might not even know we are doing\nwrong, so that we can offer advice on how to fix them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
