{"id":3358,"date":"2023-02-21T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-21T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yourvamentor.com\/blog\/?p=3358"},"modified":"2023-03-23T09:51:38","modified_gmt":"2023-03-23T13:51:38","slug":"get-great-referrals-for-your-va-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yourvamentor.com\/blog\/2023\/02\/get-great-referrals-for-your-va-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Get Great Referrals For Your VA Business"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Building a referral-only Virtual Assistant business is a dream that most of us have.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Picture it: you effortlessly get\nregular new clients from the people who know you are the best at what you do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I did it \u2013 and you can too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Getting referrals is one of the\nbest ways to grow your business. But not all referrals are great \u2013 so that\u2019s\nwhat I want to talk about in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Have you ever gotten a bad\nreferral?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I have, and it stinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If you know the person that\nreferred someone to you, you might feel obligated to work with them, for fear\nof upsetting your friend or colleague that sent them your way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But just like any potential client\nyou talk to \u2013 you need to make sure that any referral would be a good fit for\nyou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I went through a long period of\ngetting less than ideal referrals \u2013 and I had to figure out why that was\nhappening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It didn\u2019t take long!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>First, I said yes to everyone. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">For exactly the reason that I\nstated above. I didn\u2019t want to let my connections down if they sent someone my\nway. And then I worked with clients that I didn\u2019t fit with, or that didn\u2019t need\nmy level of expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Second, some of my referral sources\ndidn\u2019t know exactly what I did. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">They knew I was a VA, but they\ndidn\u2019t know what I did day to day. So they sent me people that needed skills or\nservices that differed from my favourite things to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And third, I didn\u2019t qualify the\nbudgets of the new clients.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Some of my clients sent me their\nown clients as referrals \u2013 people who were earning a lot less than my clients\nwere. That meant their budgets were lower than my ideal clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yourvamentor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/YVAM-Get-Great-Referrals-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yourvamentor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/YVAM-Get-Great-Referrals-2.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.yourvamentor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/YVAM-Get-Great-Referrals-2-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/www.yourvamentor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/YVAM-Get-Great-Referrals-2-768x402.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">When you want to grow your VA business\nwith referrals, it\u2019s essential that you map out exactly what these things look\nlike, so your referral partners know too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Keep Doing Sales Conversations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Just because someone sends you a\nreferral does not mean that you have to work with that person. <em>Should I\nrepeat that? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It may feel like you need to when\nsomeone sends you a referral, but you only have to work with clients that are a\ngood fit, that fit your ideal client profile, and that you want to work with.\nAnd of course, that they need your level of expertise!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Which means that you can decline a\nclient for any reason \u2013 no matter where they come from. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">So, you should thank your colleague\nfor the referral, and let them know you hope their connection will be a good\nfit, and then proceed with a normal sales conversation to see if they are. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Referrals shouldn\u2019t carry any\nobligation. Period. Don\u2019t treat them as though they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Be Clear About What You Do<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We can get referrals from anywhere.\nSome of them are our current or former clients, some of them might be social\nconnections, some may be colleagues \u2013 and some may be people you don\u2019t even\nknow very well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">No matter who you are getting\nreferrals from, they need to understand exactly what you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I wasted a lot of conversations\nbecause I received referrals for things that I didn\u2019t offer as services in my\nVA business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This comes down to your marketing\nmessage \u2013 it is essential to make sure that everywhere someone can read about\nyou, conveys very clearly who you work with and what you do to help them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Yeah, you knew I\u2019d find a way to\nsneak that in, didn\u2019t you \u2013 it\u2019s something I teach you all the time \u2013 but it\u2019s\nabsolutely imperative that you do this so that people can you the right kinds\nof referrals. (And it\u2019s so simple!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Make Sure The Referrals Fit You<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Referrals are only good if they fit\nwith what your VA business needs as clients. So aside from being able to turn\nthem down, and making sure that everyone knows what you do \u2013 you have to be\nsure they honestly fit your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Define who your target market is,\nand network with big pools of them. It makes getting the right kind of\nreferrals so much easier when your name is getting dropped in the circles you\nintend to find clients in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Be sure that they earn enough, that\nthey use the systems you want them to use, and that they are growing their\nbusiness at the rate you need them to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Some of my clients used to refer me\nto their clients \u2013 who didn\u2019t have the budget for my services, who were maybe\njust starting out \u2013 and who weren\u2019t at the same level as my clients were (which\nis who I wanted to work with).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I was getting referred because I\nwas amazing at what I did \u2013 but there were plenty of other VAs who were more\nsuitable for those people than me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So, getting GREAT referrals means getting your ideal clients through referrals. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">That\u2019s a simple as choosing your\ntarget market, and finding big pools of them to network with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">When I was working with 6- and\n7-figure business coaches, that\u2019s who I networked with. I got lots of great\nreferrals because I put the right message out there, to the right people. And\nwhen someone was looking for a great VA, my name came up easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">You can do the same.
