Avoiding networking.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of VAs underestimate the value of building relationships and connecting with others, both peers and potential clients, because they think that networking is just about sales, or that it\u2019s only necessary if they\u2019re \u201cdesperate\u201d for clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this episode, we\u2019re going to talk about why avoiding networking is such a huge mistake, what happens when you rely solely on passive marketing, and how to shift your mindset around connecting with people so that networking becomes something you actually enjoy as part of your regular business routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll also share some of the most common myths about networking that I see holding VAs back. And of course, I\u2019ll plant the seed for how you can work with me if this is an area you want to get better at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First, what even <em>is<\/em> networking?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of people associate networking with stuffy events and awkward sales pitches. But that\u2019s not what I\u2019m talking about here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Networking is really about building <strong>genuine relationships<\/strong>. It\u2019s about showing up consistently, being curious, being helpful, and making sure people know who you are and what you do. It\u2019s not about closing a deal on the spot. It\u2019s about becoming someone that others remember when they or someone they know needs the services you offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yes, this is something you <em>need<\/em> to do, even if you\u2019re fully booked right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The big mistake: thinking \u201cI don\u2019t need to network.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what I hear from VAs all the time when I bring up networking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m not a people person.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI just want to work quietly behind the scenes.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI hate talking about myself.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI get my clients from referrals, so I don\u2019t need to network.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI don\u2019t want to waste time in Facebook groups or Zoom calls that don\u2019t go anywhere.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These sound like good reasons, right? But underneath all of these statements is usually <strong>a fear of visibility<\/strong>. A fear of judgment. A lack of confidence. And sometimes, a misunderstanding of what networking actually looks like when it\u2019s done right, especially for virtual assistants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens when you avoid networking?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you don\u2019t prioritize networking as a VA, a few things happen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>You miss out on opportunities.<\/strong> You\u2019re not top of mind for people who need help or who know someone who needs help. That means less leads and fewer referrals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You isolate yourself.<\/strong> Working online can already feel lonely, and avoiding networking adds to that. You don\u2019t have people to bounce ideas off of or to vent to when you hit a wall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You limit your visibility.<\/strong> If people don\u2019t know who you are or what you do, how can they hire you? Or refer you? Or partner with you?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You keep your business small.<\/strong> VAs who network consistently tend to grow faster. Not just financially, but in terms of confidence, clarity, and professional development.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you\u2019re wondering why your business feels stuck, networking, or your lack of it, might be the missing piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I used to love to stay behind my computer too. I think it comes from working in a toxic workplace &#8211; all the fake hellos and chats and distractions and \u2018what should we have for lunch\u2019 conversations that I dreaded every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I worked in an office once and every time I walked into the accounting department one of the girls in there would holler Hi Tracey! &#8211; like every time. And I went into that office sometimes 5 times a day. It grated on my nerves so much, it was one of the reasons that I started disliking being in an office environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other was distractions. If I am in the middle of a task or project, I like to stay focused. I worked in another office where my office was halfway down the hall. Most people had to pass it many times a day and with 15 people in the office, you can imagine the distractions. None were worse than the marketing director who used to yell across the hall for me though. But I digress LOL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The point is, when I started working from home I LOVED the silence. I craved it. I worked hard and I didn\u2019t want to have one more dumb conversation, ever again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BUT networking means conversations. And networking well equals business. So I had to learn that the hard way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaving the comfort and quiet of my computer screen was the thing that allowed me to become the VA, teach and coach that I have become. I absolutely LOVE talking to VAs and business owners now &#8211; because the conversations are relevant and interesting and they help people do better business. I wouldn\u2019t trade it for a moment!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So let\u2019s talk about some myths of networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Myth #1: \u201cNetworking is just for extroverts.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s clear this up right now: <strong>networking is for everyone<\/strong>. You do not have to be the loudest person in the room to be successful at networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, some of the best networkers I know are introverts. Why? Because they listen well. They ask thoughtful questions. They follow up with intention. And they tend to focus on quality relationships over quantity, which is exactly what we want as VAs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can make networking work for <em>your<\/em> personality. It doesn\u2019t have to be flashy. It just has to be <em>you<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have a podcast episode called the introvert\u2019s guide to getting VA clients \u2013 the key is to work with your strengths, of which you have many!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Myth #2: \u201cI already have enough clients, so I don\u2019t need to network.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a big one. VAs often back off networking once they\u2019re fully booked. But that\u2019s actually the <strong>best time<\/strong> to network, because you\u2019re not desperate. You can show up generously and build relationships without needing anything in return right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also client situations can change <em>very<\/em> quickly. Someone goes on pause. Someone disappears. Someone no longer needs your services. If you\u2019re not consistently keeping your pipeline warm through networking, you\u2019ll have to scramble when something falls through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Networking now protects you later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Myth #3: \u201cI network in Facebook groups, that\u2019s enough.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Facebook groups and online communities can be great, but if you\u2019re just lurking or posting generic \u201cI\u2019m available!\u201d messages in comment threads, that\u2019s not real networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Networking isn\u2019t just participating in promo threads. It\u2019s about engaging meaningfully. Asking and answering questions. Cheering others on. Starting conversations. Reaching out to people directly. Getting on Zoom to connect one-on-one. Following up without pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re relying only on Facebook groups and not forming deeper relationships from them, you\u2019re missing the whole point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, what does <em>effective<\/em> networking look like?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me paint a picture of what I recommend, and what I teach inside my programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Effective networking as a VA looks like:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Being clear on what you do, who you help, and how you help them so you can communicate it easily when someone asks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Showing up in a few well-chosen online communities consistently (this should be in business groups where your ideal clients hang out).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Starting conversations instead of waiting for someone to post a job.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Following up with people you\u2019ve spoken to in the past, just to check in or share something useful.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting others by sharing resources, tagging them in relevant posts, or referring them when it\u2019s not the right fit for you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attending virtual or local events where business owners gather, and treating them as a place to learn and connect, not just pitch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this adds up over time. You build a network of people who trust you, like you, and think of you when they or someone they know needs a VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you\u2019re feeling resistance to networking\u2026<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s okay. It\u2019s normal. Especially if you\u2019re used to working alone or if confidence is something you\u2019re still building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to become a master networker overnight. You just have to start showing up, one small step at a time. Choose one place to start. Reach out to one person. Comment meaningfully on one post per day. Join one event per month. That\u2019s it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Networking is a muscle. And it gets stronger the more you use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if this is something you know you need help with, you don\u2019t have to figure it out alone. Being top of mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you don\u2019t like being \u201csalesy.\u201d<br>Even if you\u2019re an introvert.<br>Even if you think you\u2019re too busy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to do it perfectly. You just have to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s recap the key points from today\u2019s episode:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoiding networking is a major mistake that keeps many VAs stuck or stagnant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Networking doesn\u2019t have to feel awkward when you reframe it as building real relationships, it becomes easier (and even enjoyable).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You don\u2019t have to be an extrovert to do it well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waiting until you \u201cneed\u201d clients is the worst time to start networking you want your network in place long before that.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are simple, non-cringey ways to build your network consistently, without spending all day on social media.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do You Need Help?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask yourself this: where do I need to show up more? Who can I reconnect with this week?
