Target market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, before you zone out and think, \u201cBlah blah blah, Tracey, that sounds boring,\u201d hear me out. Market research isn\u2019t just for big companies with budgets and focus groups. It\u2019s one of the smartest and most confidence-building steps you can take as a VA business owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because when you understand who your target market is &#8211; what they care about, what they struggle with, and what they\u2019ll happily pay for &#8211; you stop guessing. You stop throwing out random offers and hoping something sticks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, you start building a business that actually <em>fits<\/em> your people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s dig into what market research really is, how to do it simply, and how it helps you find your target market as a VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Market Research Matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the why we struggle to get clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you first start out as a VA, it\u2019s easy to fall into the \u201cI\u2019ll help anyone who needs admin support\u201d trap. You just want clients \u2013 any clients &#8211; and you think being open to everyone will help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We think anyone who needs something we can do is a good client, and that\u2019s the only thing we can focus on \u2013 I just need one client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the truth: trying to serve everyone makes it harder to attract anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Market research helps you narrow down who you actually <em>want<\/em> to work with, and who <em>wants<\/em> to work with you. These are two really important things to know, and decide in your VA business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not about excluding people. It\u2019s not about turning someone down who you are talking to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s about marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s about getting clear on where your skills, experience, and interests line up with someone\u2019s specific needs &#8211; and where there\u2019s money being spent to solve those needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you do this well, you stop feeling desperate for clients. You start showing up confidently, because you know who you\u2019re talking to and how you can help them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the mindset shift: you\u2019re not begging for work or pounding the pavement hours a day looking for anyone to say YES. You\u2019re solving problems for a defined group of people who value your help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Market Research Actually Looks Like<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what does \u201cmarket research\u201d look like in a VA business?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s really just gathering information about your potential clients. It\u2019s learning about what they do, what they struggle with, what their goals are, and what kind of support they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can do this in a few different ways. I\u2019m going to tell you a bunch of ways you can do this, and then I\u2019m going to talk about the one that I KNOW works best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conversations:<\/strong> Talk to people! Reach out to business owners in industries you\u2019re curious about. Ask them about their day-to-day, what tasks they love or hate, and how they currently get help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Online Research:<\/strong> Look in Facebook groups, LinkedIn, Reddit threads, or industry-specific forums. Pay attention to what people are asking for, what they complain about, and what they seem to need help with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Surveys:<\/strong> Create a short survey with 5\u20137 questions. Send it to your network or post it in relevant groups. Keep it simple. You\u2019re just looking for patterns and pain points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Job Boards or VA Platforms:<\/strong> Read through job postings, even if you\u2019re not applying. Notice what types of help people are hiring for, how they describe their needs, and what rates they offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Your Own Network:<\/strong> Think about people you already know. Do you have contacts in real estate, wellness, coaching, trades, or creative fields? Those connections can help you learn what that market values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key here is to gather the right information, NOT guess at it. The way to do that? Ask the right people!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re looking for themes: repeated frustrations, goals, or desired outcomes that your clients have that you can support them with using your VA skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Three Stages of Research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s break this down into three stages to make it easy to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stage 1: Exploration<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where you brainstorm industries or types of businesses that interest you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What kinds of businesses do I already understand?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What industries excite me or feel aligned with my values?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who could genuinely benefit from what I already know how to do?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, maybe you\u2019ve worked in health and wellness, or you\u2019ve supported a coach before, or you just love working with creative people. Write down those as possible audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stage 2: Investigation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, start learning about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What challenges are common in that industry?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What kinds of support tasks do they need?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s missing from the help they already have?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are they hiring VAs? If so, for what roles and budgets?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is to understand demand &#8211; are people in that market actively looking for help like yours?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stage 3: Validation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where you test your findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might talk to a few people in that industry to confirm what you\u2019ve learned. Try a small project or retainer package to see if there\u2019s a good fit. Then adjust your messaging or packages based on the feedback you get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Validation is where you make sure your idea is grounded in reality &#8211; not just a hunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding Your Target Market Through Research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve started to do some digging, you\u2019ll start to notice patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe you see that wellness coaches keep mentioning how much time they spend scheduling clients or posting on social media. Or real estate agents talk about losing leads because they can\u2019t keep up with follow-up emails. Or online course creators say they need help managing students and materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those patterns are your gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They tell you what problems exist, what solutions are needed, and where people are already spending money, or would willingly spend money to fix the problem. THAT is how you find your target market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your target market isn\u2019t a random niche you pick out of thin air. It\u2019s the group of people who already need and value exactly the services or support you offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when you understand them, you can create packages and messaging that make them think, <em>\u201cThis VA totally gets me. That\u2019s who I need to work with.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s what leads to great clients &#8211; and great clients lead to consistent income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Market Research Builds Confidence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let\u2019s talk about confidence, because as you know it\u2019s one of my favourite topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you don\u2019t know who your audience is, you second-guess everything. Or whatever you post doesn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you are second-guessing yourself, you might wonder what to post, how to price your services, and whether you\u2019re even doing the right things. If you don\u2019t know these things, you have work to do! Research work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because once you\u2019ve done your research and you understand your market, you get clarity. You get so clear in who you help that doing your actual marketing becomes simple. And easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And you come across as a confident VA because you know who you help and why it\u2019s important to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll be able to speak directly to your ideal clients in your marketing, choose services and packages that solve their real problems, and set prices that reflect the value you bring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll stop saying, \u201cI don\u2019t know where to find clients,\u201d because you\u2019ll know exactly where your people hang out and how to connect with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s empowering. And it\u2019s something every confident VA does, whether they realize it or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If in the last month you have said \u201cI don\u2019t know where to find clients\u201d, you need to do market research. Plain and simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re listening and thinking, \u201cOkay, Tracey, I hear what you\u2019re saying but where do I start?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s where you start:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pick three industries or audiences you\u2019re curious about.<\/strong> They could be areas where you already have experience, or ones you simply find interesting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Start gathering data for one of them this week.<\/strong> Look up groups, browse job postings, or reach out to someone for a 10-minute chat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Create a simple spreadsheet or notebook to track what you find.<\/strong> Write down what people struggle with, what kind of help they want, and what they\u2019re willing to pay.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Compare your findings.<\/strong> Which group seems most aligned with your skills, your values, and your income goals?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s your starting point for your target market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to get it perfect right away. Like any research, this is a process. You\u2019ll refine it as you grow, and that\u2019s normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s circle back to today\u2019s quote: \u201cThe aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well the product or service fits them and sells itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s exactly what market research helps you do, but only if you take it beyond the surface level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now. I told you I would give you some ideas on how to do market research. And I told you that I would share what I think is the best method. So here we go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can spend hours scrolling through Facebook groups or sending out surveys, but nothing replaces real conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking directly with people in your potential market is where the gold is. That\u2019s where you discover what they truly struggle with, how they describe their challenges, and what kind of help they\u2019re actually willing to invest in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And like I said off the top: most VAs shy away from that step. They worry about bothering people or not knowing what to say.
