How Often Do You Say No as a VA?

A lot of Virtual Assistants I talk to say one of their biggest issues is doing tasks they don’t want to do every day.

But here’s the thing – you are not their employee.

Yes, they pay you to do work for them.

But that doesn’t mean that they get to decide what you do each day.

You are a business owner in your own right – and you get to decide what services you offer – and which ones you turn down.

Your VA business will become a grind a lot sooner than later if someone else is basically treating you like an employee.

Here’s how to make that change now, so you are making the decisions on what you do for each client:

When you define which tasks you will do for a client, the expectation can be set for both of you to understand what your work together will include – and what it won’t.

If you aren’t taking charge of your project list and advising the client of what you need and when, you are sitting back and acting like their employee. And guess what? That’s how they will treat you. Run your production call with an agenda, and act like the business partner that you are.

If you are doing things you don’t want to be doing, it’s entirely your fault for not turning down the task. Because you don’t have to do anything that you don’t like doing or aren’t skilled at. If you want to say no, you must do so. It will help you preserve your expertise and reputation as a professional VA.

Saying YES when you want to say NO is so common that most VAs I know have done it at least once. Yes, so have I. Many more times than once!

But it’s a cycle that you can stop. It takes a little bit of confidence and some clear communication with your clients.

It will always work out to your benefit.

After all, you started your business so that you can provide services you love for clients you love.

Now is the time to start doing exactly that!
